Abbey exit FA Vase after 3-0 defeat
Abbey Hey bowed out of the Buildbase FA Vase 5th Round after a heavy 3-0 defeat at the hands of Loughborough Students.
Two goals in the space of three minutes set the tone for the home side in the first half, before a second-half penalty confirmed the student’s place in the Quarter Finals of the competition.
It was a tight first-half at the Loughborough University Stadium but the deadlock was broken in the 34th minute through Tope Fadahunsi, who rose highest in the penalty area to head beyond Dane Smith into the bottom-right corner after connecting with a ball in from the right-hand side.
Two minutes later and Abbey Hey found themselves 2-0 down. The home side put immediate pressure on the visitors from kick off and beat Smith with a low effort from the edge of the area into the bottom-left corner.
Lazenbury close for Abbey Hey with a volley from the edge of the area, which was well held by the Loughborough keeper as the home side went into half-time with a comfortable lead under their belt.
Things got worse for Terry Hincks’ and Chris Woods’ side five minutes into the second half when Aaron Fleming fouled a purple shirt in the penalty area, which allowed Matty Bowman to finish beyond Smith from twelve yards to make it 3-0.
Chances were present for Abbey Hey in the later exchanges of the second half through Dylan Norris, Ben Halfacre and Dylan Fitzgerald, but neither of the three could take them as Abbey were knocked out of the FA Vase.
Loughborough advance to the Quarter-Finals, whilst Abbey Hey will be proud of the run they have achieved this season, which has seen them equal their best-ever run in the competition.
