Abbey Hey secure 4-0 comprehensive victory at Cammell Laird

Abbey Hey secured back-to-back wins courtesy of a 4-0 win over Cammell Laird 1907 at the Prabhu Ventures Ltd Arena.

The away side got off to a brilliant start when Dylan Fitzgerald got onto the end of a crossfield pass from Dylan Norris, before the forward slotted the ball under the goalkeeper at his near post to give Abbey the lead after only eight minutes.

Things got even better for Terry Hincks’ side five minutes later when Matt Grimshaw slotted away his first goal in an Abbey shirt, as he rose highest to head home a Tom Murray corner at the near post.

After a very quick start in the Wirral, Abbey Hey had many opportunities to find another goal. Ben Halfacre hit the crossbar with a header, before further chances couldn’t be taken by either Fitzgerald or Halfacre before the break.

But Abbey would go into half time with a 3-0 lead, courtesy of a Rhys Clooney strike after 41 minutes. He turned inside from the right onto his left foot, before striking a low effort beyond the Cammell Laird keeper from close-range for his fifth goal of the season.

Abbey continued their search of goals within the second half and Fitzgerald went close again with twenty minutes of play to go. The goalkeeper came a long way out of his penalty to clear the ball but could only get it as far as Fitzgerald, he tries his luck with an effort from long-range, but his effort rolled inches wide of the right-hand post.

Halfacre got in on the act two minutes later when he tapped home a Norris cross in from the left-hand side to make it 4-0 with his 15th goal of the season to put the game to bed for the visitors.

Abbey record their second successive league win and will now turn their attentions to this weekend’s North West Counties First Division South game away at Ellesmere Rangers on Saturday afternoon, where they will look for to secure another victory in the league.
